Estonia declared its independence on this day in 1918 in Tallinn, the country’s capital. Today’s Doodle honours the Republic of Estonia’s birth on its Independence Day.
To officially start today’s events, Estonia’s multicoloured national flag is raised over Tallinn’s famous Toompea Castle, as portrayed in the Doodle artwork. Many Estonians watch a television broadcast of traditional events, including speeches by local authorities, a concert, and the laying of wreaths at Tallinn’s historic Freedom Square, as part of the day’s festivities.
As people reflect on more than a century of statehood, a famous lunch of kiluvileib, an open-faced sandwich topped with a sprat fillet, is served across the country in recognition of Estonian customs.
Estonia, happy independence day!
