One of the two Independence Days celebrated by the country, Azerbaijan’s Restoration of Independence Day is honored in today’s Doodle. Over 70 years of Soviet domination came to an end on this day in 1991 when the Constitutional Act of State Independence of Azerbaijan was approved by the Supreme Council.
On May 28, Azerbaijan celebrates its first Independence Day, honoring the day the Democratic Republic of Azerbaijan was founded in 1918. As a result, the country became the first in the Middle East to adopt democracy. The Soviet invasion in 1920 ended this independence, which is why October 18th was designated as Restoration of Independence Day—the second Independence Day.
Following work, many go to parades or get together with loved ones for a delectable dinner like plov, which comes in a variety of regional varieties and is made with rice, dried fruit, nuts, and meat. Additionally, it is customary for people to fly the national flag, similar to the one seen in today’s Doodle.
Happy to Azerbaijan’s Restoration of Independence Day!
