What is the status of British players?

With players Jack Draper, Emma Raducanu, and Katie Boulter all having some success on clay this season, British tennis came into the French Open feeling a little more optimistic than normal.

Draper advanced to the Madrid Open final before losing to Casper Ruud of Norway in three sets. After that, he advanced to the quarterfinals of the Italian Open in Rome before being defeated by eventual winner Carlos Alcaraz.

The 23-year-old had lost his first two matches in “The City of Light” and had then failed to advance past the first round. Nevertheless, he is having his best Roland Garros run ever following victories over Gael Monfils and Mattia Bellucci.

Raducanu appeared to have overcome her dislike of clay in the women’s draw and achieved some success. Of particular note was the Italian Open, where she won three straight matches on the surface for the first time in her career before being stopped in her tracks by American Coco Gauff in Rome.

Raducanu narrowly lost to Danielle Collins in Strasbourg in three sets four days prior to the French Open due to an injury scare, but he persevered to go to the second round at Roland Garros with a valiant victory over Xinyu Wang. In the second round, however, Raducanu lost in straight sets against world No. 5 Iga Swiatek, who was too strong for her.

Outside of Madrid and Rome, Katie Boulter only defeated world No. 64 Katerina Siniakova once. It appears that she has finally adjusted her game for the surface, though, since she entered and won the lower-ranked WTA 125k Paris event last week.

However, Boulter lost to world No. 8 Madison Keys in the second round of the French Open, ending his run.

Jacob Fearnley and Cameron Norrie, who will play each other in an all-British third round match, are two additional British players in this week’s singles draws.

Sonay Kartal was eliminated in the second round, and Jodie Burrage fell to Danielle Collins in the first.

Who are the favorites?

It is difficult to ignore Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the Italian Open finalists, as the clear favorites to win the men’s draw. With a two-set victory in the final, Alcaraz emerged victorious in Rome. In addition, he is the current Roland Garros champion.

But don’t overlook Sinner. Following a three-month ban due to two positive drug tests in March 2024, the world No. 1 returned to tennis in Rome.

The bracket is slightly more open in the women’s draw.

Iga Swiatek is vying for her fifth Roland Garros title in the last six years and her fourth in a row. She has, however, been a step below her imposing best in recent weeks, most notably losing to American Danielle Collins in the third round of the Italian Open.

There are multiple contenders to unseat Switaek. There is the American Coco Gauff, who in recent weeks advanced to the finals in Madrid and Rome before losing to Aryna Sabalenka and Jasmine Paolini, respectively. The championship will be eyed by all three.

Another is 18-year-old Mirra Andreeva, who advanced to the semifinals the previous year but is having a breakthrough season, having already won two WTA 1000 titles.
