On American soil, a number of the greatest professional soccer teams in the world will soon square off, and these won’t be the typical exhibition games that US soccer fans have had to endure when the best teams visit.
The 2025 FIFA Club World Cup will kick off in full next month in stadiums across the United States, with 64 matches scheduled to determine the tournament champion. This year, the number of club teams representing 20 different countries has increased to 32. Among the most well-known athletes and clubs with a long history are Real Madrid, Inter Milan, Lionel Messi, and Inter Miami.
When LAFC of Major League Soccer plays Club América of Mexico in a play-in match to decide the final team in the field on Saturday, May 31, the action officially begins. The possibility that Cristiano Ronaldo will change teams before the match begins adds even more excitement.
The format of the event has changed since 2000, but it now more closely approaches what will be used in 2026 when the World Cup makes its first appearance in the United States in 30 years. Club teams will play three round-robin matches after being divided into eight groups of four. The top two teams in each group will then advance to the knockout stage, which consists of the round of 16, quarterfinals, and semifinals. On July 13, the FIFA Club World Cup finals will take place at MetLife Stadium outside of New York, capping the bracket.
12 clubs from Europe, six from South America, four from Asia, four from Africa, four from North America, four from Central America and the Caribbean, one from Oceania, and two from the United States are represented in the revised 2025 group stage and bracket. Major League Soccer’s Seattle Sounders and Inter Miami both earned spots in this year’s competition.
