This playoff match comes after FIFA’s multi-club ownership regulations eliminated Club León from the Club World Cup.

Chelsea (England), Flamengo (Brazil), and ES Tunis (Tunisia) will be in Group D, along with either LAFC or Club América. As part of the tournament’s historic $1 billion prize pool, Concacaf teams also receive a guaranteed $9.55 million for competing.

From June 14 to July 13, 32 teams compete across the United States in the Club World Cup, which ends with a final at MetLife Stadium.

Los Angeles Football Club

The 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup runners-up, LAFC, were given this chance after losing to Club León 3-1 overall in the two-leg final under head coach Steve Cherundolo.

The Black & Gold are still a strong competitor in the Western Conference after two years. They have also gone eight games without losing (3W-0L-5D), most recently securing a 2-2 comeback draw at CF Montréal with a rebound finish from Olivier Giroud.

If LAFC wins, they would join Seattle Sounders FC (2022 Concacaf Champions Cup winner) and Inter Miami CF (host nation place) as the third MLS team to compete in the Club World Cup. Denis Bouanga, who has 10 goals in 20 games this season across all competitions, is their main danger.

Club América

Club América has won a record 16 LIGA MX titles, making them one of the most illustrious teams in the Western Hemisphere. In Leg 2 of the Clausura final, they lost 2-0 to Toluca on Sunday night, ending their hopes of winning four straight titles.

The outcome only serves to strengthen the team led by head coach André Jardine, which is full of well-known players. Alejandro Zendejas, a former homegrown attacker for FC Dallas and member of the US men’s national team, is on that list.

Las Águilas would compete in this summer’s major competition alongside fellow Mexican teams CF Monterrey (2021 Concacaf Champions Cup winner) and CF Pachuca (2024 Concacaf Champions Cup winner) if they win.
