Doodle celebrates National Sovereignty and Children’s Day in Turkey

This Doodle celebrates Children’s Day and National Sovereignty in Turkey. Thousands of children from all over the world gather in Turkey on April 23 every year to celebrate and gain a better understanding of other cultures.

The Turkish Grand National Assembly was established in Ankara on this day in 1920, marking a significant step in the creation of the Republic of Türkiye. Exactly nine years after the celebration of Turkish independence, the assembly accepted Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s proposal and made April 23 a national holiday honoring children. As a result, Turkey became the first nation to observe a Children’s Day.

Every year, children from all over the world are invited to visit Turkey and take part in the celebrations. As a reminder that children are the future, celebrations range from festivals where kids can sing and dance to symbolic actions like schoolchildren sitting in the Turkish Parliament and “governing” the nation for a day.

Happy Children’s Day and National Sovereignty Day, Turkey!
