Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) is investing an additional $100 billion to its activities, a daring move to boost semiconductor manufacture in the United States. A significant milestone in the continuous endeavors to establish the United States as a global leader in semiconductor production and artificial intelligence, the statement was made by former President Donald Trump on Monday.
By making this most latest investment, TSMC has now committed $165 billion in the United States, which will be used to build five new chip manufacturing plants in Arizona. It is in line with Washington’s efforts to return advanced chip manufacturing to the United States, which are seen by national security and economic experts as an important priority.
Powering AI-driven technology is TSMC, a major supplier to IT behemoths like Apple and Nvidia. Additionally, the investment comes after Trump’s recent AI infrastructure effort, which aims to bolster America’s innovation the ecosystem and includes Oracle, OpenAI, and SoftBank.
Over the years, Trump has emphasized the importance of rebuilding U.S. chip production, often criticizing Taiwan for dominating the semiconductor industry. His administration previously introduced tariffs on semiconductor imports and provided financial incentives to companies investing in domestic production.
TSMC has been steadily expanding its footprint in the United States. The business invested $12 billion in its first site in Arizona back in 2020. Later, as more plants were planned, that amount increased to $65 billion. To further solidify its position in the nation, TSMC also obtained a $6.6 billion subsidy from the US Commerce Department.
A spokesperson from Nvidia emphasized that the company will continue leveraging TSMC’s global manufacturing network to ensure a strong, resilient supply chain.
