Box Office Weekend: “Sinners” Leads with ($30M+), “Accountant 2” ($23M+), “Revenge of the Sith” ($20M), and “Minecraft” ($18M+)

The movie Sinners by Warner Bros. has distribution executives all over town giddy. As the demos for the films reach much beyond horror lovers, don’t be surprised if there is much more than the conservative prediction of $30M for the second weekend at 3,347. It might even be as low as -17% to -26% ($35M to $40M). With $10M so far, Sinners’ second Friday is down 48% from its opening day and previews. Sinners is on pace to surpass Ryan Coogler and Michael B. Jordan’s second collaboration, Creed ($109.7M), when it soars to $107.5M by Sunday.

All of this points to the best final weekend of April after COVID, surpassing the $100.2 million earned in 2023 when Super Mario Bros. earned $40.8 million in its fourth frame. Just the top five titles are expected to make between $100.5M and $110.5M.

Just a little ahead of the previous film’s release, Amazon MGM Studios/Artists Equity’s The Accountant 2 is bringing in $9.9M today for a 3-day run that looks like $23M at 3,610 screens.

Today, Disney’s 20th anniversary re-release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith earned $10 million, putting it in third place for a possible $18–20 million three-day run at 2,775 theaters. In May 2005, Episode III made $108.4 million at the domestic box office and went on to earn $380 million. This weekend will bring the film starring Hayden Christensen, Ewan McGregor, and Samuel L. Jackson closer to the four-hundred-year threshold. Disney has a few PLFs for Sith and 4DX.

At $3841, Warner Bros./Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie has $5M today and $18M in its fourth weekend, which is -55% for a running cume of $375.2M on Sunday.

Until Dawn, an R-rated horror film from Sony/Screen Gems, is now earning about $3 million at 3,055 locations and is expected to open at about $7 million.

FRIDAY AM: With $3.4 million in previews last night ahead of its one-week run, Disney’s re-release of Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith has the potential to upset the box office chart this weekend. Based on presales, we had heard that the film, which has received little advertising outside of theaters, may earn more than $20 million. Does it disqualify The Accountant 2 from No. 2 on Amazon MGM Studios?

In the meantime, the Ben Affleck Artists Equity film made $2.5 million from all previews, including a “Tax Day” screening on April 15. The sequel hopes to make at least $20 million. Preview-wise, Accountant 2’s competitors include Den of Thieves 2 ($1.5M) and Jason Statham’s The Beekeeper ($2.4M), which only drew audiences on Thursday nights. Before recording a $9 million Friday, three-day total of $24.7 million, the original Accountant in 2016 made $1.35 million in previews. According to Rotten Tomatoes, The Accountant 2 has a 76% certified fresh rating and a 92% popcorn score. Compared to your typical meat-and-potato action movies like Den of Thieves 2 or Statham’s Beekeeper, which both cost $40 million before P&A, The Accountant 2 cost $80 million.

Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan and directed by Ryan Coogler for Warner Bros., made $6 million yesterday, bringing its first week total to $77.5 million. This is more than the first week of The Conjuring ($61.7 million) and far higher than the first week of Get Out ($49.8 million).

Pink Floyd at Pompeii: MCMLXXII is being re-released in 2,550 theaters in 64 countries through Trafalgar with Sony Music Vision. The concert picture charted $1.29 million last night from 654 sites in North America alone.

Until Dawn, an R-rated horror time loop movie from Screen Gems, made $1 million on Thursday night previews, which started at 4 PM at 2,630 sites. David F. Sandberg, the director of Annabelle: Creation and the Shazam! franchise, is aiming to generate $8–9 million off of a $15 million production budget. At 62% fresh, Until Dawn reviews aren’t too bad.
