Barbie surpasses the final “Harry Potter” film to become the highest grossing Warner Bros. film ever globally

Barbie’s magic skills are endless.

On Monday, Greta Gerwig’s movie will surpass Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2’s $1.342 billion global box office haul to become the highest-grossing Warner Bros. film in the studio’s history, not adjusted for inflation. Through Sunday, Barbie had earned $592.8 million domestically and $745.5 million internationally. The summer movie will become just the 13th film in history to surpass the $600 million mark domestically on Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

The popular fashion doll from Mattel, played by Margot Robbie, smashed a lot of records. On August 16, the box office smash surpassed Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight to become the most successful Warner Bros. film in North America.

At the domestic box office last week, Barbie overtook Illumination and Universal’s runaway blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie to take the top spot for the year 2023 in North America. In the upcoming days, it is anticipated to surpass Super Mario Bros.’s $1.36 billion global gross to take the top spot among all video games globally. Barbie would then rank No. 15 among all-time top-grossing films.

Once it reaches that milestone, Barbie will aim to surpass Frozen II’s $1.43 billion global box office haul in order to become the highest-grossing film ever from a female director, whether it be live-action or animated.

As the highest-grossing female director of all time at the US box office, Gerwig is already the highest-grossing female director of a live-action film globally.

“Reaching this outstanding achievement is a reminder of the power of moviegoers — from countries in every corner of the globe — coming together to further the celebration of an iconic character that has entertained us for so many decades,” said co-CEOs of Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy in a statement. They also acknowledged the actors, which included Robbie, Ryan Gosling, and America Ferrara, as well as co-writer Noah Baumbach, producers David Heyman and Tom Ackerley, Robbie’s husband and co-producer who oversaw the Harry Potter series.

Even though the majority of the film was already finished when the two actors arrived on the Warner lot, Abdy is claimed to have been crucial in certain last-minute production decisions. (And De Luca and Abdy are in charge of marketing and distribution.)

Although many are uncertain if Barbie will ever reach $1.5 billion internationally, anything is possible.
