Educated at India’s Andhra University, with a Master of Computer Applications degree, Murali Natti started his working career in 2005. From database engineer through DevOps manager to security lead, this path speaks volumes of an unbending commitment to crack difficult nuts. Today a major player with one of the technology industry’s premier firms, he is charged with overseeing the important database infrastructure, bringing in depth knowledge in PostgreSQL, Oracle, MySQL, Cassandra, and SingleStore to bear, with endorsements such as AWS Solutions Architect Associate.

The pain points of the industry are stark. Large database upgrades pose the risk of downtime, performance bottlenecks can bring applications to their knees, and security breaches risk user trust. To address these, he invented a rollback approach to PostgreSQL upgrades, leveraging logical replication and standby databases to guarantee data integrity and low disruption. This strategy significantly reduces both downtime and data loss. Because the standby database stays synchronized with the main database during the entire upgrade, it can immediately take over as the main database if needed. This greatly limits any service interruptions, making sure that downtime is only as long as it takes to switch over.

“Innovation in databases isn’t about speed,  it’s about establishing trust through reliability,” he once declared, summarizing his philosophy of developing systems that enable organizations to innovate fearlessly.

Murali Natti’s contribution is real. Through creating auto failover configurations for PostgreSQL, he increased system availability for business critical applications. His vision in moving terabytes of data to cloud environments such as AWS and Alibaba Cloud made it possible to run high risk projects smoothly, including a quick setup for an exclusive customer base in China. These initiatives did not only improve efficiency but raised the bar on scalability and redundancy, allowing organizations to serve communities without disruption.

To further enhance system reliability, he architected and implemented a suite of database availability check tools and performance metrics dashboards from scratch. These tools monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), providing customers with real-time insights into database health and enabling proactive issue resolution. As a leader of onsite and offshore teams, he has cultivated an entire generation of database professionals, sharing collaboration and skill-building. His decision to organize a Postgres Day event brought platform users together, initiating discussion and encouraging best practices. By codifying processes and coaching teams, he has been able to equip peers to drive challenges confidently with a ripple effect of expertise.

Murali Natti’s projects highlight his versatility. Leading a database as a service platform streamlined data management across applications, while his Oracle-to-PostgreSQL migrations, using Oracle Golden Gate, minimized downtime for multi-terabyte systems. As a security lead, he implemented robust measures like pgAudit and credcheck, safeguarding sensitive data. His recent work integrating generative AI has accelerated data analytics, driving faster decision making. Organizing hardware benchmark testing and capacity management optimized resources, ensuring systems could scale to meet growing community needs.

His work contributes further. A 2023 article, “A Rollback Strategy Using Logical Replication for PostgreSQL Major Version Upgrades,” is a how-to manual for database upgrades safely, which has been cited extensively by administrators. It is based on experience and has given organizations confidence to implement new technology, minimising risks and improving service integrity.

The social impacts of his work are extensive. Through team mentoring, he has created a workforce that can survive high growth conditions, fortifying the industry’s bedrock. His decade long honed customer focused style ensures solutions fit real-world requirements, creating trust and collaboration. Activities such as the Postgres Day event have democratized access to advanced methods, making it possible for smaller organizations to compete. His optimizations have freed up resources, allowing companies to invest in community focused innovations, from smarter healthcare systems to more accessible financial services.
